Colombian Official Reveals ELN Leader Ordered Killing of Former FARC Commander Zarco Aldinever

José Manuel Sierra Sabogal, better known by his alias "Zarco Aldinever," was a high-ranking member of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) who later became involved in criminal activities after the peace deal between the Colombian government and FARC. Recently, Colombia's High Commissioner for Peace, Otty Patiño, confirmed that Sierra Sabogal was killed on orders from Gustavo Aníbal Giraldo, also known as "Pablito," a top leader of the National Liberation Army (ELN). This revelation came after months of speculation about Zarco Aldinever's fate following rumors of his alleged death in August 2025.

Sierra Sabogal was born in Villavicencio, Meta department. He joined FARC at the young age of 14 in 1990 and quickly rose through the ranks to become a commander within the Eastern Bloc. During his time with FARC, he served with the 51st, 52nd, and 26th fronts in departments such as Meta, Cundinamarca, and Boyacá. His responsibilities included drug trafficking and taxing cocaine production and trafficking routes under his command.

Following the signing of a peace agreement between the Colombian government and FARC in 2016, Sierra Sabogal renounced his allegiance to the organization but later took up arms again in 2019 with the Second Marquetalia, a dissident group composed of former mid- and high-ranking FARC commanders. This move marked a significant shift from his initial commitment to peace.

The confirmation that Zarco Aldinever was killed on orders from an ELN leader highlights the complex and often violent dynamics between different armed groups in Colombia. The ELN's involvement suggests ongoing competition for control over drug trafficking routes and territories, which remains a lucrative business despite efforts towards peace and stability in the region.

Zarco Aldinever’s career trajectory reflects broader trends within Colombian conflict dynamics, where former combatants may return to criminal activities due to lack of opportunities or continued instability. His death underscores the challenges Colombia faces in consolidating peace after years of armed conflict, as well as the enduring influence of paramilitary and guerrilla groups on the country's security landscape.

The revelation about Zarco Aldinever’s killing also sheds light on the intricate alliances and rivalries between different factions within Colombia’s criminal underworld. It indicates that despite efforts to integrate former FARC members into civilian life through peace agreements, many continue to operate in areas contested by other armed groups like the ELN.

Understanding the circumstances surrounding Zarco Aldinever's death is crucial for assessing the effectiveness of ongoing peace processes and security strategies aimed at reducing violence and promoting stability. His case serves as a reminder of the persistent challenges faced by Colombia in its efforts to achieve lasting peace and national reconciliation.
