Saronic Selects Brownsville, Texas for $3 Billion Autonomous Shipyard Project

Saronic, a leading manufacturer of autonomous vessels, has chosen Brownsville, Texas as the site for its ambitious Port Alpha shipyard. The company plans to construct what it claims will be the most advanced shipyard in the world, with an initial investment exceeding $3 billion. This announcement comes on the heels of recent milestones for Saronic’s Corsair drone boats, including their combat debut against Iran and a life-saving rescue mission near the Strait of Hormuz.

The Port Alpha project is set to break ground this year and aims to be fully operational by 2028. The site in Cameron County will initially cover 835 acres but has room for expansion up to nearly 4,400 acres. Saronic envisions Port Alpha as capable of building vessels up to 850 feet long, comparable to a U.S. Navy Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, with potential future expansions supporting even larger ships.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott made the announcement from Saronic’s Austin headquarters, highlighting the significant economic impact expected from the project. The company estimates that Port Alpha could create up to 10,000 jobs over the next decade and generate an estimated $264.5 billion in economic benefits for Texas and $160 billion for Cameron County.

To secure this major investment, the state of Texas has extended a grant worth $80 million from its Texas Enterprise Fund, while Cameron County approved a 95% tax abatement over two decades to support Saronic’s expansion. However, these incentives faced local opposition due to concerns about corporate welfare and job creation targets.

Saronic’s decision to locate Port Alpha in Brownsville was influenced by the company's strategic vision of integrating advanced autonomy into larger naval vessels. Dino Mavrookas, Saronic’s co-founder and CEO, emphasized that while initial ships may not be fully autonomous, future developments could lead to completely unmanned fleets.

The establishment of Port Alpha aligns with broader federal initiatives aimed at revitalizing the U.S. shipbuilding industry. These efforts include executive orders on maritime dominance and legislative measures like the SHIPS for America Act, which aim to bolster domestic naval and commercial vessel production after years of decline compared to global competitors such as China.

Saronic’s selection of Brownsville underscores its commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology in ship construction while addressing critical national security needs. The company plans to collaborate with educational institutions to develop specialized training programs for the workforce needed at Port Alpha, ensuring a skilled labor pool capable of supporting advanced manufacturing processes.
