X-Bow Unveils Buckler Drone Interceptor to Tackle Costly Dilemma

X-Bow Systems, a New Mexico-based solid rocket motor manufacturer, has unveiled its latest innovation at the 2026 Farnborough Airshow in London—the Buckler drone interceptor. This new system aims to address the critical issue of combating inexpensive enemy drones with disproportionately expensive defense interceptors. The unveiling comes amid growing concern over the escalating costs associated with defending against swarms of low-cost, mass-produced unmanned aerial systems (UAS) like Iran's Shahed attack drones.

Buckler is designed to target Group 3 drones—those weighing up to 1,320 pounds and flying below 18,000 feet at speeds under 250 knots. The interceptor can operate at supersonic speeds and has been tested successfully. Most importantly, each unit is priced under $100,000, marking a significant reduction in cost compared to existing high-priced interceptors that often exceed millions of dollars per shot.

Jason Hundley, X-Bow's founder and CEO, emphasized the importance of addressing the current imbalance between defense costs and enemy drone expenses. "You can't win a war of attrition trading million-dollar interceptors against thousand-dollar threats," Hundley stated in a press release. The Buckler interceptor is manufactured entirely within X-Bow’s facilities, eliminating production bottlenecks that have plagued other high-cost systems reliant on multi-company components.

The need for such an affordable and effective solution has become increasingly urgent as the United States continues its military engagement with Iran. U.S. troops in Central Command's area of operations are currently facing a significant challenge: using expensive interceptors to counteract Iran’s much cheaper Shahed drones. The stark disparity in costs means that deploying existing high-end interceptors, such as the PAC-3, results in an unsustainable cost-per-kill ratio ranging from $4 million to $35,000 per drone neutralized.

X-Bow's announcement follows a recent test flight of the Buckler munition, which demonstrated its propulsion and flight capabilities. The company’s approach not only addresses immediate operational needs but also considers long-term sustainability by streamlining production processes. By manufacturing both the airframe and propulsion systems in-house, X-Bow aims to ensure consistent supply chain management while reducing overall costs.

In parallel with X-Bow's unveiling of Buckler, defense giant Lockheed Martin introduced its Morfius X-Rotor at the same event. The Morfius X-Rotor is a ground-launched high-power microwave counter-UAS system designed to neutralize over 50 enemy drones in a single flight. This new technology complements X-Bow's efforts by offering another scalable solution to combat drone threats efficiently.

Both companies' initiatives reflect a broader trend within the defense industry to develop more cost-effective and versatile technologies that can effectively address emerging threats without straining military budgets. As conflicts continue to evolve, finding affordable yet robust solutions remains crucial for maintaining operational readiness and strategic flexibility.

The unveiling of Buckler at Farnborough underscores the urgent need for innovative approaches in addressing the escalating costs associated with drone defense systems. By providing a more economical alternative, X-Bow Systems aims to offer a viable solution that can be adopted by both U.S. forces and its allies, enhancing overall military capabilities while managing financial constraints.
